Jolie Guillebeau

Day 4.

Orchid

I always wanted to be a painter. When I was 7, I remember reading a French-English dictionary over and over, so that I’d could speak French when I moved to Paris and painted all day.

Somewhere between 7 and “grown-up” I lost that idea though. I had a teacher that discouraged my art dreams and a few suggestions from family that I’d make more money in real estate.

And I got the idea that I couldn’t really paint. You know, that it was cute when I was 7, but that no one really liked my stuff once I was older.

Then the year before we moved to Africa, I took a painting class. It was mostly just for fun, but the teacher was encouraging. And I came across a picture of an orchid in some book. And I painted it. I still remember that day as the painting came together, and I thought– “Jolie, maybe you can do this. Maybe you are a painter.”  I love that painting. It hangs in a corner of our living room.

A couple of weeks ago, Chris brought a potted orchid home because it’s the same kind as the one I painted. It reminds me that I can paint.

Hopefully I can remember to water it.
